Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive or 55b/c service as a Trades Specialist (Electrician).Non-Competitive Appointment to Trades Specialist (Electrician): Candidates must have Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.Non-Competitive Appointment to Trades Specialist Trainee 1 (Electrician): Full-time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below which is primarily engaged in the performance of unskilled and/or semiskilled labor and trades tasks AND• Must be 18 years of age or older;• Must possess a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; and• Be proficient in English and math.Non-Competitive Appointment to Trades Specialist Trainee 2 (Electrician): Successful completion of a 52-week probationary period as a Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1; completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework and 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework or passage of an equivalency exam or proof of successful completion of equivalent training; 144 hours of electrician trade specific instruction; and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training. Trainees must maintain a “C” or better average in their coursework.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have: • Working knowledge of methods, material, tools and equipment used in the craft or crafts to which assigned.• Working knowledge of applicable standards and plumbing and electrical code regulations.• Working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the facility governing the activities of State wards.• Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and material of the craft or crafts to which assigned.• Ability to train and supervise others.• Ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems.• Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Performance Improvement and Management Services is seeking candidates for a Trades Specialist (Electrician) position in the Office of Facilities and Business Services. A Trades Specialist (Electrician) is responsible for all electrical work including the planning and laying out of work and the diagnosis of trouble in electrical systems or equipment in an assigned area, on an assigned project or for an entire facility. Job duties to include, but are not limited to: • Performs journeyman level electrical duties.• Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical trade.• Repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and electrical systems and equipment including but not limited to fixtures, motors, load centers, relays, controls, circuitry, and related equipment in accordance with the National Electrical Code.• Locates and determines electrical malfunctions using test instruments such as ammeter, volt meter, and ohmmeter.• Plans new or modifies installations consistent with specifications and national electrical code.• Will be required to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.• Will be required to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.• Tests, adjusts, calibrates, and maintains a wide variety of control equipment, including but not limited to building heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment controls for refrigeration; and for a wide variety of other equipment and systems.• Performs maintenance, and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment including but not limited to bathroom exhaust fans, clothes dryers, sump pumps and generators.• Will be required to train and supervise others.• Ability to climb ladders, work from scaffolding and mechanical lifts.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of experience in coursework will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. ** Upon appointment to Trades Specialist Trainee 1 (Electrician), the incumbent of this position will register for the Applied Skilled Trades Program. The traineeship will begin in January 2023 and the incumbent is expected to attend and complete the requirements of the Applied Skilled Trades Program traineeship, including required coursework. Successful completion of the Applied Skilled Trades Program traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.This position may be filled as a traineeship. The starting salaries for this position are outlined below. For current New York State employees, salary is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire. Candidates appointed at the trainee level will be required to successfully complete the traineeship to advance to the full performance level title and salary. • $41,399 (Trainee 1- NS equated to SG-09)• $46,306 (Trainee 2- NS equated to SG-11)• $48,956 (Full Performance level SG-12)This position leads to a maximum salary of $59,757 based on annual performance advances and traineeship advances.
