Ankeny Family Counseling Mental Health Counselor in Ankeny, Iowa

Job description

Duties and Responsibilities- A Therapist's main responsibility is to provide the necessary care and support to help clients who have a mental health condition with a medical condition resolve and manage issues in their lives. Some key Therapist job duties include:

  • Conducting initial consultations to gather patient information
  • Using a trauma informed approach to assist individuals in reaching their goals
  • Helping clients on a variety of issues such as adjusting to injury, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, emotional lability, cognitive challenges and more.
  • Attending continuing education
  • Assessing clients' emotional and mental health and developing treatment plans to meet them
  • Collaborating with a team who works together to provide a transdisciplinary approach to the mental health journey
  • Asking questions and listening to help clients explore their thoughts and feelings
  • Leading clients through mental exercises and role-playing activities when beneficial
  • Counseling and advising clients on issues of importance to them
  • Intervening with emergency care techniques and protocols when clients are in crisis
  • Providing referrals for additional care or services when required
  • Maintaining detailed confidential records

Skills and Qualifications- Therapist careers usually require a certain skill set. Some common qualifications of high-quality candidates for Therapist positions include:

  • Extensive knowledge of mental health conditions and best practices for psychological treatment
  • Knowledge and willingness to attend continuing education on helping clients adjust to injury, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, emotional lability, mental and behavioral challenges and more
  • Well-developed listening and interview skills to explore patient needs and administer treatment plans
  • Strong oral communication skills to counsel and advise clients
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to develop effective treatment plans

  • Familiarity with privacy, health and safety laws
  • Computer skills to operate record keeping, scheduling, email and word processing software
