About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville Sanitation Division is seeking a new team member to advance community waste reduction goals. This position develops and manages the waste reduction programs for the City of Asheville. They will need to be self-motivated, passionate, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be a team player.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Performs technical, office/administrative, and field work in the development, administration, management and enforcement of waste management programs, initiatives, ordinances, and regulations.

  • Develops and implements long- and short-term plans, goals, and objectives for waste reduction.

  • Develops and manages annual waste reduction programming budget

  • Organizes, prioritizes, and supervises work of interns and volunteers

  • Develops, implements, and manages waste reduction programs: researches, develops, implements, tracks, and manages programs for recycling, composting, litter, yard waste, and other waste reduction programs.

  • Provides technical expertise and recommendations regarding waste management and sustainability projects.

  • Oversees Request for Proposal (RFP) and contract development and renewals, including partnerships and agreements, for waste management programs.

  • Performs outreach, assistance, education, coordination, and communications activities.

  • Manages grant application processes and granted funds.

  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of and background in waste management and reduction as well as regulatory rules and laws in order to provide the technical assistance and outreach aspects of this position.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

    About you:

    We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered :

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Sustainability, Project Management, or a closely related field required; supplemented by five years of experience related to environmental education or science, sustainability program management, or related field, to include three years of solid waste experience with a focus on waste reduction and recycling; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid NC driver’s license and have an acceptable motor vehicle driving record.

The following certifications must be obtained within 18 months of hire:

  • Solid Waste Association of North Carolina (SWANA) certification

  • North Carolina Compost Operator certification

  • OSHA 10 certification

  • CPR/First Aid certification

    Other things to know:

    • This position is Full Time Exempt, 37.5 hours/week, with the opportunity for a hybrid remote/on-site work arrangement.
  • The Sanitation Division operates Mon-Th 7am-5:30pm at the City of Asheville Public Works Building. This position may require participation in evening or weekend events, and work schedule may be flexible depending on needs of the Department.

  • Full Salary Range: $ 62,352.70 - $ 93,529.05; Applicable experience will be considered.
