Interventional cardiology at BIDMC is an exciting, progressive, and dynamic environment focused on all aspects of percutaneous coronary intervention procedures. Our team is nationally and internationally recognized, performing over 6000 procedures annually. We are leaders in developing and evaluating novel technologies for the treatment of complex cardiovascular disorders.

Our interventional suites consist of 4 cardiac catheterization rooms, three hybrid ORs, three electrophysiology labs, and a 15 bay cardiac holding area. We support state-of-the-art catheter-based clinical and investigational treatments, perform peripheral angiography and highly complex EP interventions, including 3D mapping, sophisticated ablation techniques, device implants, and lead extractions.

The structural heart program is a national leader in transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR), valvuloplasty, PFO, ASD and VSD repair.

Our fast-paced Interventional Cardiology unit performs cardioversions and TEE procedures and provides highly specialized pre and post-procedure care. “

Job Description:

Assists the invasive cardiologist and/or vascular surgeon in the performance of invasive cardiac and vascular procedures. Shares responsibility in the acquisition and processing of state-of- the-art imaging and the efficient operation of equipment in the interventional and endovascular labs. Participates in hemodynamic monitoring, scrubbing and circulating duties. Maintains adequate levels of inventory in assigned procedure and restocks inventories as needed. Reports to the Chief Technologist and Nurse Manager.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Applies concepts of sterile technique to setup procedural workspace. Prepares and drapes patients using standard sterile technique. Accurately monitors, assesses, and documents hemodynamic measurements and objective procedural steps for all procedures.

  • Independently operates all imaging and non-imaging systems/devices/consoles necessary to support all clinical situations. Able to independently troubleshoot all equipment issues. Calls for service and maintains documentation of service calls. Assists physician in completion of all procedures. Takes peripheral and cardiac call as scheduled.

  • Ensures that all documents/images associated with the patient record are accurately labeled with correct patient identifiers. Responsible for ensuring that all images obtained during the procedure are stored correctly in PACS. Assists in resolving all manner of PACS issues as directed.

  • Always applies the ALARA principle to maintain a safe environment for patients and all procedural staff during procedures. Monitors radiation exposure during procedure and advises physician. Documents all fluoroscopy times and radiation doses accurately. Ensures that all radiation badges are worn by staff and physicians. Performs daily QA/QC tests on imaging equipment as assigned.

  • Works in a collegial and collaborative relationship with other health professionals. Promotes the development of collaborative relationships with peers and other health professionals by articulating practice issues and communication in a professional and constructive manner. Advocates for patient safety at all times.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Radiologic Science required. Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Science preferred.

  • License Radiology MA License required., and Registration American Registry of Rad Tech required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required., and Certificate 2 Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.

  • 1-3 years related work experience required.

  • Must be able to work in a 20lb. lead apron.

  • Advanced technical computer skills as required for technical support specific to functional area and related systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ARRT Registration in Cardiac-Interventional Radiography preferred.

  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus.
