Job Title: Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic I

Department: Transportation

Reports To: Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: As a member of the Martin's employee family, the Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic I repairs and maintains company vehicles to minimize breakdowns as well as maintain state, federal, and DOT standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications , and tire r eplacement and balancing .

  • Cleans work bays as necessary.

  • Washes trucks and performs general cleaning as assigned.

  • Repairs l ights and small electrical repairs on vehicles as necessary .

  • Assists with parts put-away as needed.

  • Performs minor tr actor preventative maintenance on a lternators , s tarter s, oil changes, batteries, and belts.

  • Perfor ms state inspection on automotive vehicles and verifies registration is valid.

  • A fter repairs, examines and test drives vehicles to ensure that the repair was made successfully and that the vehicle is working properly .

  • Examines and adjusts protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.

  • Raises trucks and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.

  • U ses hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.

  • Ensures all parts are examined, including belts, hose, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.

  • Keeps up-to-date technically and applies new knowledge to the job. Willingness to attend technical training provided by either manufacturers and/or other designated parties to advance skills and improve quality of work.

  • Maintains cleanliness of work area.

  • Assists Level 2 and 3 mechanics as required.

  • Retrieves parts from local merchants when necessary.

  • Drives to designated location to swap automotive vehicles in need of maintenance.

  • Participates in on-call rotation to support break downs.

  • Assists other organizations or departments as necessary.

    Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED;

  • Five years’ related experience;

  • Prior diesel training.

    Language Skills:

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to other employees of organization.

    Mathematical Skills:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills:

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Vehicle Maintenance planning & tracking software (EAM) system.

  • Cadec and Diagnostic software.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Current valid driver's license.

  • Valid state inspection license for tractors and trailers.

  • Valid air conditioning certification

    Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate a forklift and electric jack.

  • Knowledge of welding, plasma cutter and cutting torch.
