SUMMARY

The Estimator is responsible for estimating and providing management with detailed pricing for development of bid quotations and bid package for the assigned division(s) supporting projects. This person should have relevant experience in preparing complete cost estimates for review.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect historical cost data to estimate costs for current or future products.

  • Consult with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments, or construction foremen to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.

  • Prepare estimates used by management for purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work.

  • Analyze blueprints and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.

  • Confer with engineers, architects, owners, contractors, and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.

  • Review contract, bid documents, understand scope and unique requirements in order to prepare estimate

  • Attend walk-throughs, pre-bid and scope clarification meetings

  • Prepare scope letters and proposals

  • Develop & maintain relationships with customers, General Contractors, vendors and subcontractors

  • Perform design/build, conceptual and budget estimates

  • Coordinate the efforts of junior and staff-level resources in performing take-offs, issuing bills of material to vendors and obtaining subcontractor quotes

  • Coordinate efforts with the Engineering Department for design build estimates

  • Escalate critical and/or sensitive issues to the Manager with recommendation for resolution.

  • Develop budget estimates from conceptual information.

  • Complete bids timely and accurately to attain profitability.

  • Prepare bid package and submit for final review before submitting to general contractor/client.

  • Review estimates from subordinates, make corrections, suggestions or approve as necessary.

  • Provide copies of plans, take-offs, and all pertinent estimating data, ensuring that drawings, specifications, labor hours/days and special requirements are clear and unambiguous.

  • Formulate site requirements and exclusions for bids and include in proposals as needed.

  • Evaluate project scope changes and review and price field change orders as requested.

  • Develop RFQ/RFP documents for the solicitation of subcontractor proposal and vendor bids or quotations.

  • Provide value engineering ideas and cost delta.

  • Ensure flow of estimate information is maintained and documented according to defined process.

QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of estimating experience.

  • High School diploma or GED required.

  • Bachelor of Science in and Master of Science in engineering or construction related field desirable.

  • Knowledge of the construction industry and contract documentation.

  • Design-Build experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of NEC, Title 24, CBC and local codes required

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word and Excel applications.

  • Proficient with Accubid, and other electrical, technical, or construction programs.

  • Familiarity with project management/document control software.

  • Familiarity with construction/financial software packages.

Must have the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in English, cooperate, and collaborate with multiple levels of customers, employees, unions, government agencies, vendors and suppliers, and other contractor organizations.

The physical demands of this position are those associated with working in a typical office environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, see, talk, and hear. This role requires communicating verbally and in writing one on one, in small groups, as well as presenting to larger groups of employees. This role requires the ability to work at a computer (reading and keying) for extended periods of time. The employee must move within the office to retrieve files and meet with employees in their offices or conference room. The employee is regularly required to walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally required to travel by car (as a passenger or driver) to job sites, or to attend Commercial department events/training.

While visiting field locations, the employee may be required to work outdoors, be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical and electrical parts; high, precarious places; dust, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions, extended exposure to sunlight; cold and heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
