DESCRIPTION

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is seeking qualified candidates interested in applying for a Summer Food Program Coordinator position for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Recreation Superintendent. The 2024 Summer Food Service Program will run from June 2024 through August 2024 at 25 sites across the City of Long Beach. This position is temporary and scheduled hours may vary by week on an as-needed basis. During the months of January through September, the successful candidate may work up to 25 hours per week.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $74 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.

The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised after school and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinate the Summer Food Program from apply for the Grant, which includes coordinating with different partners.

  • Submitting all Grant documents with in the SFSP time schedule.

  • Oversee all marketing material for the program.

  • Assume responsibility for approximately 25 SFSP sites that provide lunches to area children.

  • Prepare for the SFSP, which includes scheduling and presenting mandated training to monitors and staff serving summer food.

  • Oversee Summer Food monitors by scheduling them and giving daily assignments.

  • Make sure monitors are Make daily visits to each site to conduct and submit mandated periodic site reviews, assist serving staff, deliver supplies, correct site violations, and ensure regulations are being followed.

  • Review and correct daily site tallies of lunches served.

  • Input information daily from the site tally sheets into a Microsoft Excel Document.

  • Maintain program records.

  • Drive to various park sites.

  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of selection.

  • Five (5) years of experience working in recreation or a related field, including two years of experience acting as lead staff (an equivalent amount of education in a related area may substitute for up to one year).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher.

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Ability to work rapidly and accurately under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to combine tact, patience, and a professional demeanor to ensure grant rules and regulations are followed.

  • Ability to perform a large volume of simple math calculations accurately.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.

  • Must be dependable and punctual.

  • Willingness to work with children from a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
