DescriptionDEPARTMENT: CAMP GIFFORD POSITION TITLE: SAILING CAMP DIRECTOR STATUS: SEASONAL, FULL TIME SUPERVISOR: Camp Business Manager MISSION STATEMENT: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. SCOPE OF POSITION: The job of the Sailing Camp Director is to see that all aspects of the Sailing Camp is running smoothly. The Sailing Camp Director will be responsible to the Corps Youth Officer and will have full authority to recommend hiring and firing of the camp staff, as well as serve as the general counsel for camper and/or staff disciplinary problems. The Sailing Camp Director supervises the sailing staff comprised of the sailing instructors and counseling staff. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: High School Diploma preferred Certified US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor or equivalent (including First Aid/CPR) Powerboat driving experience required with valid Washington or Oregon State boaters card Minimum two years sailing experience Excellent sailing skills with the ability to instruct sailing students Extensive technical knowledge of sailing Some prior teaching experience is preferred 2 years sailing and youth sailor coaching experience giving chalk-talks, on-the-water practices, etc. Past participation in youth, high school, and/or collegiate programs with a competitive focus Technical experience with 420 sailboats or other single/double-handed dinghies Responsible, reliable, and enthusiastic with good judgment and class leadership skills Excellent customer service skills First Aid and CPR Ability to follow oral and written directions Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Capable of maintaining positive working relationships with staff and customers Able to interact effectively with a diverse population ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee the Summer Residential Sailing Camp program under the leadership and cooperation of the Corps Youth Officer Participate in the planning and implementation of creative programming that meets the mission of Camp Gifford and The Salvation Army Arrange and schedule programs with the key staff of the summer camping program Supervise program and counseling staff Create and maintain good staff morale and arrange scheduling to allow for appropriate personal time-and fellowship with other staff when allowed by camp schedule Responsible for camper disciplinary problems Create, implement and supervise Sailing program Ensure an outstanding safe, organized, and educational experience to campers on land and water Instruct youth sailors ranging from beginner to advanced (ages 10-17) on 420 sailboats or other single/double-handed dinghies Exhibit commitment to teamwork, strong working relationships, and supporting fellow instructors Assist sailors in setting goals with a focus on progress, improvement, and a winning tradition Encourage participation and motivate sailors to a high level of commitment at practices Develop constructive daily lesson plans using scheduled program times, combining classroom and on-the-water lessons or activities Set goals and objectives for camp season Set practice calendar; confirm schedule with Camp Director and Corps Officer Make appropriate decisions to ensure safety of students and boating staff Conduct pre-practice chalk-talk with instruction and plan-of the-day Explain and demonstrate proper sailing techniques Ensure all evolutions are safely executed Make sound weather decisions by monitoring weather and water traffic conditions Direct sailing instructors and safety boat officers during instructio
