The Position

Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by State and federal safety and health laws and regulations.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The Division's mission is to preserve and enhance the environment of the State in order to protect public health, sustain healthy ecosystems, and contribute to a vibrant economy. The Division has staff in Carson City and Las Vegas that contribute to this mission in diverse work environments that include the office, current and former mine sites, industrial and service facilities, construction sites, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and natural environments. This position will support and enhance staff safety in all work activities and environments by reviewing, updating, and implementing the Division's Health and Safety Plan(s) and related policies and procedures; facilitating and assisting staff and supervisors complete workers compensation procedures and forms; attending and providing Division job related safety trainings; creating and maintaining a centralized tracking and reminder system for individual staff and supervisors for safety requirements; ensuring employees are aware of Emergency/Evacuation Procedures and the Division has designated employees trained to implement the procedures; and coordinating and developing an effective Safety Committee. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, or related field and one year of experience in at least three of the following areas: hazard identification, hazard evaluation in relation to existing standards, hazard control design, hazard controls verification, safety/health program design, and safety/health program evaluation; OR Bachelor's degree in environmental, biological or physical sciences, public health, or engineering and two years of experience as described above; OR certification as an Associate in Loss Control Management, Associate Safety Professional, Occupational Safety and Health Technologist, or Associate Safety and Health Manager and two years of experience as described above; OR municipal, State, or national instructor certification in safety and health, hazardous materials, environmental sciences, fire science, or related field and two years of experience as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Safety Associate, Consultation or Enforcement in Nevada State service.

Special Notes

Travel to out-of-state locations for mandatory federal OSHA safety and health training is required for some positions.

Special Requirements

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience.
