Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Law School Career Counseling Officer. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Career Development, the Career Counselor Officer, plays a critical role in the management and supervision of the daily operations of the Center for Career Development which include, and are not limited to, the following:
  • Plays a key role in career counseling and professional development assistance to law students and graduates, with particular emphasis on employer relations and part-time student and alumni counseling
  • Career counseling and professional development assistance to law students and graduates, developing and implementing a wide range of programs, events and activities aimed at increasing the knowledge base of students and alumni, as well as the overall visibility of the law school in the broader legal community, and developing and implementing the law school's employer outreach program
  • Work independently within broadly defined work objectives
  • Performs professional work that requires specialized to general knowledge of legal education, numerous diverse practice settings and practice areas and effective and innovative job search techniques and strategies

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Master's degree in business, counseling, human resources, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience,
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of career counseling theories and methodologies for individuals and groups, career development or marketing experience, preferably in a law school environment

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the legal employment market is necessary
  • Ability to aggressively market the law school to attorneys, recruiters and other legal professionals and employers.
  • Must demonstrate exemplary judgment and be able to make decisions independently within defined practices and procedures.
  • Exemplary administrative, analytical, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, as well as excellent oral and written proficiency required
Preferred Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of legal environments and legal practice experience is strongly preferred.
  • J.D. strongly preferred.
