Sunrun Staff Quality Engineer in San Francisco, California

The primary objectives of the Quality Department are to ensure that our services and products align perfectly with their intended design and function, consistently exceeding customer expectations. To accomplish this, we implement sophisticated Quality Engineering techniques including Six Sigma for process enhancement, Lean methods for reducing waste, and Total Quality Management to achieve overall organizational excellence. Additionally, we aim to reduce organizational costs by identifying and correcting inefficiencies stemming from operational mistakes and product faults through comprehensive Root Cause Analysis and the enforcement of effective Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).

Central to our strategy, when issues occur, our approach is to quickly contain them, thoroughly investigate to determine the root cause, and execute corrective measures to prevent future recurrences. We proactively work to identify and mitigate potential risks to boost the efficiency and capability of our operations using innovative strategies, tools, or materials. This includes using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to predict and address potential failures, and applying Statistical Process Control (SPC) to monitor and manage process performance effectively.

The Quality Engineering team at Sunrun is dedicated to ensuring flawless installations and maintenance of residential energy solutions by continuously enhancing the quality of our processes, products, and the supporting systems through persistent application of Continuous Improvement methods and stringent Quality Control tools.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate for the Staff Quality Engineer position at Sunrun possesses both technical proficiency and a strong analytical mindset, complemented by a customer-focused approach and a steadfast commitment to excellence. This role demands a proactive problem-solver with a forward-thinking attitude, always eager for personal and professional development. A solid background in quality principles and methodologies, often validated by credentials such as Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Six Sigma Black Belt, is highly desirable.

The Job

As the Staff Quality Engineer at Sunrun, you will be an integral part of our skilled Quality Engineering team, aiding in the quality assurance of our installation and service processes, as well as maintaining the integrity of our comprehensive hardware fleet and the various software and firmware solutions.

  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Conduct detailed assessments to identify potential risks in solar system installations and servicing. Implement solutions that mitigate these risks to ensure system performance and reliability.

  • Control Plan Execution: Support installation and services leaders with detailed control plans that monitor the installation and maintenance of solar systems. These plans focus on adherence to critical safety and performance standards, directly impacting the quality of the work performed.

  • Audit Criteria Application: Apply established audit criteria to ensure that solar system installations and services meet Sunrun’s specifications and maintenance standards. Work closely with compliance guidelines to ensure ongoing quality.

  • Collaboration with Training: Work closely with the training department to inform and refine training content, ensuring that it addresses the real-world challenges engineers and technicians face during installations and servicing of solar systems.

  • Feedback Analysis and Application: Systematically gather and analyze feedback from field operations, customer interactions, and OEM partner communications. Use this data to suggest specific improvements in installation and maintenance processes.

  • Cross-Functional Technical Collaboration: Act as a technical liaison within cross-functional teams, ensuring that quality and safety protocols are integrated into all aspects of solar system installation and lifecycle management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Electrical, Mechanical, or Renewable Energy Engineering.

  • Professional certification in Quality Engineering or Project Management (e.g., CQE - Certified Quality Engineer, PMP - Project Management Professional) is an advantage.

  • Proficiency in technical tools and software used for design, testing, and quality assurance of solar installations.

  • Strong understanding of solar system components, including photovoltaic panels, inverters, and other related hardware.

  • Experience with quality control methodologies.

  • Familiarity with Solar OEM assets and the management of their lifecycle.

  • 7+ years of experience in quality engineering, specifically in solar energy or related fields.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, maintaining attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

  • Travel up to 25%

Starting salary/wage for this opportunity:

$144,510.19 to $192,680.25

Other rewards may include annual bonus eligibility, which is based on company and individual performance, short and long term incentives, and program-specific awards.
