Summary

SUMMARY: The SLH Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible and accountable for the delivery of patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse, according to the philosophy and goals/objectives of the Department of Nursing. The EMT collects data and implements task specific functions as directed by theRegistered Nurse. The EMT delivers care that is specific to the special behaviors / needs of the patient and isage appropriate for the individual, as well as, providing for the patient's significant other's. The EMT will notsub delegate tasks that have been delegated by the Registered Nurse. Distribution of staff and patients mayrequire reassignment to other nursing areas. Performs related duties as required.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE:The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification, however, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

  1. Able to operate necessary computer programs. Operates computer for order entry, charge entry, ED Point of Care log, patient restraint log.

  2. Assumes an active role in supporting clinicians in the care of the patient. Collaborates with other members of the health care team. Reports patient condition to R.N. and/or physician, per policy.

  3. Completes basic physical observation on patients as assigned. Delivers care that is specific to the developmental age and special needs/behaviors of the patient population served. Prepares patients for examination by the physician, and for procedures. Assists nurse or physician with medical surgical procedures. Assists during cardiac arrest by performing CPR, placing monitor electrodes, oral airway placement, obtaining equipment and supplies as directed by M.D. or R.N. Collects urine, stool and sputum specimen and ensures they are properly labeled and sent to the appropriate department. Provides direct patient care within their scope of practice. Discontinues IVs and/or heparin locks, once competency is verified, and at the direction of the RN and/or MD.

  4. Ensures that all charts have the appropriate forms in place. Accurately transcribesphysician orders. Obtains patient's vital signs and documents on chart. Documents observations of patient behavior on chart and reports observations to R.N. Assists with disassembly of charts and filing. Enters lab test, treatment orders on computer; calls appropriate department, as indicated.

  5. Maintains patient and family dignity and confidentiality.

  6. Performs supportive functions that maintain smooth functioning of the clinical area.

  7. Promotes a safe environment for staff, patients, and family members. Orients patient to the Emergency Dept. environment (call bells, etc.).

  8. Ensures call lights are within patient's reach; siderails up on stretchers as indicated for patient safety. Keeps patients informed regarding progress of treatment.

  9. Supports the organizational mission, values, and goals when providing care.

  10. Transports patients via wheelchair and stretcher, as needed. Assists with patient discharge (e.g., help to car). Completes patient level and procedures charges with accuracy.

  11. Assists with ordering of supplies and restocking the Emergency Dept.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Experience: One year clinical experience pre-hospital care and/or acute care preferred. Six months experience within Alameda Health System considered.

Required Licenses/Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support Certification - issued by AHA-American HeartAssociation.

Required Licenses/Certifications: Must have one of the following certifications: EMT or EMT-P. CNA License considered.
