Responsibilities Role and Responsibilities As Captain, you will act as the shift commander, directing all security and control operations during a shift. This also means overseeing staff and providing maximum facility coordination, inmate supervision and safety as well as preparing records and reports. In this role, you will: Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures (including emergency procedures) and regulations for custody, security, and treatment of inmates. Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with all security, safety, sanitation, contraband, fire, and other facility regulations. Review disciplinary matters concerning both staff and inmates. Coordinate staffing requirements for security supervisors and officers and assess staff effectiveness. Respond to all unusual occurrences. Provide direct line supervision over correctional officers; make assignments, review post orders, and assure that staff is trained in implementation of all procedures. Promote an atmosphere conducive to character development (encourage favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of facilities and influencing relationships among inmates). Facilitate prompt assistance to inmates in the event of injury, illness, or emotional trauma. Give primary guidance when issues arise; make referrals for more complex problems. Support, clarify and help inmates relate to all facility programs. Write various documents, including policies, courtroom defenses and contract negotiations. Implement facility goals.
