In this vital role as Executive Director, Scientific Communications you will be crucial in shaping and broadcasting the scientific narratives that drive understanding and appreciation of our groundbreaking products, particularly our transformative cardiometabolic medicines. In this high-impact position, you'll harness your expertise to strategize and execute communications that resonate across global markets, enhancing patient care and outcomes.

Your work will directly contribute to our mission of serving patients by bringing vital information into the hands of those who can make a difference—the healthcare professionals, patients, and public health decision makers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Scientific Communication (SciComm) Team across the Therapeutic Area (TA) portfolio, including both marketed products and pipeline molecules.

  • Lead SciComm teams to:

  • Develop scientific communication plans and content to communicate Amgen’s science in alignment with product and franchise strategies for Global and US

  • Planning and execution of medical educational events and activities

  • Contribute to global medical strategies through scientific expertise and defining appropriate, relevant, and innovative channels for delivery of scientific content

  • Drive adoption of innovative approaches and digital solutions in all communication strategies to make complex scientific data more accessible and engaging for targeted audience.

  • Develop, maintain, cultivate, and influence strong relationships with cross-functional colleagues to ensure alignment of scientific messages across all platforms and materials.

  • Understand the external landscape and advance the scientific communications capability in alignment with evolving regulatory, legal, and industry guidelines and recommendations

  • Mentor, inspire, and manage a diverse team of scientific communication specialists, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning. Develop individual team members' skills and careers through structured training programs and hands-on projects.

We are all different, yet we all use our unique contributions to serve patients. The medical professional we seek is an experienced leader with the following qualifications.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of scientific communications experience OR

  • Master’s degree & 10 years of scientific communications experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of scientific communications experience AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a life science discipline (PhD, PharmD, MD)

  • Prior experience in Medical Affairs or Clinical Development within the biopharmaceutical industry, and/or clinical or research experience in the areas of cardiovascular, bone neuroscience, nephrology

  • Previous leadership of a function and experience managing direct reports

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical industry guidelines, regulatory and legal/health system environment

  • Finance and budget management experience

  • Ability to lead multiple disciplines and initiatives in a fast-paced environment, with changing priorities and significant time pressures to shape functional strategy

  • Interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal), time management, project planning, aptitude in presenting in front of executives and strong ability for self-direction

  • Knowledge and experience with multi-channel scientific platform and innovative communication tactics

  • Deep understanding of Good Publication Practices, including familiarity with external guidelines, recommendations, and standards (e.g., ICMJE, current Good Publication Practice (GPP) Guidelines GPP)

  • Externally recognized leader or expert in scientific publications, communications, or medical affairs practices

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $267,084-$317,625.
