Summary

This adjunct faculty member is responsible for teaching Maritime courses at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy (GLMA). This adjunct faculty member will employ a range of suitable strategies to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions and encourage active learning in all students, maintain proper class-related records, and promptly assess student coursework and apprise students of progress. The adjunct faculty member is a member of the professional teaching staff that is responsible for effectively implementing the mission of Northwestern Michigan College and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to relate well to a diverse population of learners. Responsibilities may include teaching nights, weekends, and/or online instruction.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited Maritime College/University • Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC) • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Preferred

• Teaching experience • Merchant Marine Officer experience aboard Great Lakes Vessels • Train the Trainer • Valid STCW Certifications • Working knowledge of STCW Code

Drug Screen Policy

All NMC personnel who hold a current Merchant Marine Credential as a condition of employment are subject to United States Coast Guard Drug & Alcohol Testing in accordance with 46 CFR. As part of the employment process, new employees holding a current MMC are required to submit a letter from their current or last employer confirming that they have been subject to a random drug testing program in accordance with the Coast Guard regulations for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. If this letter cannot be provided, the new employee is required to undertake a DOT 5-panel drug test with a Negative result before employment can commence and provide evidence of that Negative result verified by a qualified MRO.

Specifically, adjunct faculty have these responsibilities; other duties may be assigned.

Teaching Responsibilities

When teaching any courses including but not limited to online, accelerated, livestream, hybrid and face-to-face formats, the adjunct instructor will meet the responsibilities of adjunct faculty in the areas of Curriculum, Teaching Effectiveness, and Professional Qualities and Abilities. Adjunct faculty are encouraged to participate in Professional Development and in areas that Support of College and Community Initiatives.

Teaching Effectiveness

• Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities • Uses current and emerging technologies in distance learning and in the classroom; conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques • Listens to students and coaches them to actively participate in the learning process • Uses a variety of assessments to promotes student demonstration of learning through exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings • Provides a course syllabus to the students that includes the College Syllabus information outlined in Moodle • Maintains and regularly updates Moodle gradebook and/or other electronic grading systems

Faculty Professional Development

• Continually engages in learning and scholarship in the area of specialization as time allows
