JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Vehicle Control and Dynamics Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking a talented and experienced Flight Control and Dynamics Engineer to join our cross-functional team supporting the design, development, and validation of undersea vehicle flight controls from concept through fielded systems. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

You Will:
Design and validate autopilots for undersea vehicles using classical and modern control theory
Model undersea vehicle dynamics and create 6DoF flight simulations
Design and validate inertial navigation system software for undersea vehicles
Debug and test software using unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop system tests
Support in-water test planning and data analysis
Support flight control system requirements definition and trade studies
Document algorithms, specifications, software, and defects
Estimate development efforts
Proactively seek improvements for algorithms, software, and processes
Share knowledge with team members
This job will be filled at the advanced or senior professional level, depending upon your education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline; a Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering is preferred. A minimum of 5 years related experience is required for the advanced professional level; additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.

The ability to present ideas, concepts, and instructions in a clear, audience-appropriate manner
The ability to work equally well independently or as part of a team
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Matlab
Simulink

Active government security clearance
Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.
This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:
$109,300.00 - $191,000.00
